    Default Introduce Yourself!

    Welcome!
This thread is for Puget community newcomers and veterans alike to get to know each other better. Feel free to post anything you like about yourself and/or your various alter egos.

I'll get the ball rolling and make some suggestions about things we could share.

So, who is Max Mercury? Well, if you ask a writer named Mark Waid, Max is a fictional superhero in the DC Comics universe, whose special power is being able to harness and control "the speed force" in order to catch villains. In other words, Max can run very very fast.

As for the non-fictional Max? Here's a little bit about me:

    1. Some favorite sci-fi books:
I enjoy all sorts of fiction and non-fiction, but in terms of sci-fi, off the top of my head, some favorites are Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Lathe of Heaven," Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep," Greg Egan's "Quarantine," and Alexander Key's "The Forgotten Door." The latter is aimed at children, and I first read it as a kid then re-read it as an adult and wasn't disappointed.

    2. Some favorite TV shows featuring computers:
Star Trek. Star Trek. Star Trek.

    3. Some favorite movies featuring computers:
2001: A Space Odyssey; 2010; Star Trek II, IV; Star Wars V, VI; Silent Running

    4. What was the first computer I owned?
An IBM PS/2 50Z. This had an Intel 286 processor running at 10MHz, 1MB RAM, a 3.5" floppy drive, and a 30MB hard drive. It used what was called microchannel architecture (MCA), which made upgrades expensive, but I managed to add a math coprocessor. Since I'm into computer history, I still have the PC, running DOS 6.22.

    5. Who in the world of science do I admire?
This would be a long list, but for now I'm going to go with Galileo. Also Gregor Mendel.

So everyone, now it's your turn! Stop in here and tell us a little bit about yourself, and it doesn't have to be related to computers. You can talk about your favorite movies, PC games, board games, card games, music, books, sports, vacation spots, snacks, childhood memories, animals and so on. Be truthful, be creative, tell a whopping tall tale. It's up to you.

    Have fun!

    Hmm...

    I guess I'll jump in.

PsY is short for PsYkHoTiK. I first conjured this nickname when I started playing Unreal Tournament (I play FPS' ultra crazy - twitchy and all over the place). I write for a tech site in my spare time (check my profile).

I love to overclock. I love finding stability while pushing hardware. I live and breathe computer hardware and I love researching and reading up on things related to it. Its pretty rare that someone asks me something that I haven't heard anything about (literally almost all my free time is spent reading up and researching). I also follow hardware prices pretty closely (I know how much most things cost on the market).

I started using computers before I started preschool (on the 486 - it was in the mid 80s). My first over clock was an unlocked PIII 800MHz that I changed the multiplier on. I discovered it accidentally when I was wondering around the BIOS (out of pure curiosity).

First 'real' OC'd computer was a P4 2.0A that was pushed to 2.75GHz. That was also the first computer that I built. I have since then gone through nearly a dozen processors and ram, half a dozen mobos, and even more graphics cards.

My other hobbies are gaming (a LOT of gaming), Hobby Grade R/Cs, Cars, and as of late, learning how to play the electric guitar.

I am a man of conviction thus any endeavors that I partake in, I always go all the way all out on.

I am in person, never serious (seriously) and I joke about everything and anything.

I love helping people out. My greatest peeve in the tech world is mis-information. I hate it when people spread around things that are blatantly wrong.

I never turn away anyone who truly wants to learn. Information is free (though not always free to distribute - NDA / Embargoes).

Fav shooters: HalfLife series, FarCry and Crysis, BioShock.
Fav strategy Games: Dawn of War series, World in Conflict, Company of Heroes

    I do not do MMOs.

I am a super audio freak (rips everything to FLAC, bought a FLAC capable 'audiophile' personal music player, headphones from Japan-land, and intends to get a nice speaker system once I have more disposable income and move out of an apartment). Well an A/V freak in general (picture quality is a must!).

I am also studying for my GMAT right now (well not studying - can't really study it, more like reading and practicing). PCs are one of my many life's passions, but I have decided to dedicate my life to Business (emphasis on management).

Hi all. My name is Dan. One of many Dan's here at Puget.

I work on search engine optimization for Puget. Helping them rank better for phrases such as 'custom computers', 'custom laptops', 'custom servers', and hundreds of other keyword phrases.

More about me (including a picture) can be found here, http://www.haymeadows.com/about-us.htm.

You may wonder why I have sooooo many posts and you rarely see me? Well, there is a backside to these forums where I do the majority of my participation.

    Hi again!

Great and interesting responses so far! You know, I wasn't sure how to set up this thread to encourage participation. I see you all didn't need any sort of template, (like the list of questions I answered about myself), which is cool -- after all, this is a custom PC site, so you customized your own introductions! Good job, and it makes for much more interesting reading, IMO.

I can certainly relate to wanting to work around peaceful people, and I think your goal of wanting to focus on helping others is admirable. Already you share your knowledge with people here, so thanks!

I can relate to this as well. Fun, fun.

So, Marshall, do you know what field you want to go into as a career, or are you exploring various things right now?

OK, gang, keep up the great autobiographies!

    Cool Re: Introduce Yourself!

Hey, nice thread, so here goes,

my handle Ransom is short for my rpg name Ransom Pendragon and is totally my true alter-ego (except he is really like me). I made it up ages ago when I first got turned on to MUD games and only 2 people have ever guessed the origin (one of them being Max). I don't play MUD games anymore having moved on to the world of graphics and solo game play.

My first computer was some x86 with I have no idea what kind of OS, a monitor that displayed in black and gold but had a nice chess game, an original Tetris game called Nyet (that still runs on anything, I keep a copy on my USB key) and Word Perfect. Hooked up to a dot matrix I did all my papers for college on it. I was already, um, 25 by then I think.

My first "real" computer was an IBM Thinkpad 750CD, running both win 3.1 and the IBM OS system that I removed (was it just called OS?). I keep it for memory sake and I think it could be collectible and because I can play my favorite computer pinball game of all time (EPIC Pinball, Undersea and Robogirl tables rock) and a goofy game called The Oregon Trail.

I make a living as an analyst of Workers Compensation medical billing data (thrilling) and use a program called SAS daily, along with Excel and some utilities. But it gives me enough cash to spend money on my hobby of PC games (mostly RPG's sprinkled with strategy). I'm computer literate enough to know when I am interested enough to figure something out, when I want someone to do it for me and when I really need help! I rely a lot on forums like this one to help me out when I get in over my head!

I am happily married with 3 rotten cats and a mortgage, but no cable tv. Aside from PC games and web surfing I like general science, sci-fi and fantasy, history, literature, poetry, music from opera to punk, and occassional bird watching and star gazing. I prefer the mountains or the ocean (long walks on the beach...) which is why I live in the Sacramento valley since it is flat farmland.

I ran into PCC when I was heavily researching gaming computers having decided that I needed something to play Oblivion on (my Toshiba managed Rome:TW and Civ VI but that was pushing it). I had been looking at Alienware for a year but when it was time to shell out the cash I made the right decision with PCC (since I wasn't gutsy enough to built it myself). So that is how I ended up here!

    cheers,
    ransom

I've been around Puget for a while now, but I will post anyway.

My name comes from my love for baseball, I played for many years before deciding against playing in college. I'm a freshman at San Diego State University.

The first computer I bought was a Shuttle from Puget over 3 years ago, but the first in my family was some crappy system running Windows 3.1. It had a couple games on it that I played, and I especially honed my Math skills playing Number Munchers (lol). My Shuttle, however, was for gaming. I enjoy FPS and MMOs including Counter Strike and Ragnarok Online. I also play Super Smash Bros. Melee for Gamecube, which is a lot of fun.

I found Puget while shopping for computers online, and was so impressed by the service they gave to just a potential customer that I knew there was something special about them. I was right, and have ordered two great computers from them.

not really sure i have to many education issues to move on to getting a career. and i'm not really the smartest person once i do turn on the pc you know such as programming, web design , etc. i find most pc work cool and would like to do it but i'm a bad learner when it comes to programs, any kind of stuff like that even games it takes me awhile to get a hold of. so ive always spent my time with pc's switched off and tinkering to make them run better or just run period. hell even when i get bored i clean my pc interior of dust and check all the cables for nicks or anything i can find. i'm the same way with cars too i hate driving but i love to repair upgrade or just check the oil. i dunno i'm just odd this way.

as for other careers i have no idea what i would like to do. i like sales and i'm told at work i'm pretty good at it cause i can usually explain to a customer anything they need to know in regular language. but other than that no i have no idea

    thanks for your comments though
