Introducing: Intel Core i7 (Nehalem)

Every once in a while something comes along in the computer industry that shakes things up - a new graphics processing chip, a new data storage method, etc. Recently that new technology came in the form of a new processor architecture from Intel: the Core i7. It is a novel design, building on top of the success Intel has had with the Core 2 platform, and because it uses a new socket (1366) Intel has released the X58 chipset to pair with it. This platform brings with it several new features:

Hyper-threading is back, allowing the Core i7 to make the most of its processing cores. Checking Windows Task Manager shows all 8 separate logical CPUs!
Triple-Channel Memory steps up bandwidth to keep the CPU well-fed with data, and the Core i7 itself has an on-chip memory controller to ensure low-latency access to system memory.
SLI and Crossfire Support makes the X58 is the first mainstream desktop chipset compatible with both SLI and Crossfire graphics setups. That means customers are no longer tied in to using one brand of video cards when making upgrades.

With games, the bottleneck is usually a video card and not the CPU - but that is changing. Cutting edge games like Far Cry 2 are pushing the boundaries of with advanced physics and AI that are processor intensive. In order to get the best possible experience in both today's games and future titles, a Core i7 based gaming computer will be a definite advantage.

There are also a lot of benefits that Core i7 brings to the table for other applications, especially in the media editing arena. Audio and video editing have always performed very well when processing cores were added, and the return of hyper-threading is a great advantage in that area. General multitasking will also stand to benefit, and even with several intensive applications running a Core i7 system should still be responsive to user interaction.
