MemTest86 is a standalone program that thoroughly tests your memory for errors.
The program runs independently of an operating system. This precedures outlines
running the memory test for those systems that do not have a floppy drive. You
will need a CD recorder drive and a blank cd.
- Download the Memtest image file by clicking
here. Hit "Save" and save it to a temporary folder.
- Extract the Memtest zip file using an uncompression program. If you have Windows
XP, it comes with one. If you don't have XP, use a decompression utility like
7Zip to
extract the archive.
- Download the BurnCDCC ISO Recorder file by clicking
here. Decompress the file, and copy BURNCDCC.EXE to your desktop.
Using BurnCDCC to make the MemTest86 CD:
- Double click on BURNCDCC.EXE on your desktop. Under "File Image" hit "Browse" and select the MemTest86 ISO file.
- Put in a blank CD in your CD recorder drive.
- Press the "Start" button.
- When copy is completed, the program will indicate so.
Running the memory test:
- Leave the newly created CD in your CD drive (or whatever cd drive is the
boot cd drive). Restart the machine to boot from the cd.
- System should boot from cd and the memory test will automatically run.
If your memory can withstand even one pass (which can take anywhere from 10
to 30 minutes), you can have confidence that your memory is error free!
