The 320-series solid-state drives represent the third generation of Intel's SSD development. While the name has changed from the older "X25-M" moniker, the 320-series drives are indeed the successor to those drives - using a very similar controller chip but smaller, more dense 25nm memory. These are aimed at mainstream users, particularly those who want larger amounts of drive space compared to earlier models.

The smaller capacity models in this series - like this 40GB unit - offer affordable prices, but with a small sacrifice in performance. They are still many times faster than traditional hard drives in most metrics, and definitely fit certain usage needs, but if you are looking for the best performance consider a larger size drive.
