Western Digital has updated their popular VelociRaptor line of performance hard drives to help it better compete with modern solid-state drive technology. These drives feature a SATA 6 Gbps interface, more cache, and higher capacities than earlier versions. They still lag behind solid-state drives in performance, though, so they really only make sense if you need decent speed but a lower price per GB than SSDs require.

Here at Puget, we recommend these drives as often as we can! Although they're a little bit expensive, they are the fastest performing mainstream hard drives available. We used to say SCSI was faster, but impractical. Nowadays, SCSI is actually about the same speed or slower for desktop applications (although it may give a performance advantage for servers). These drives come with a 5-year manufacturer warranty which is the longest warranty we've seen for mainstream hard drives.
