A new entry into the field of anti-virus, this free program from Microsoft seems to be effective - but time will tell. It is also very unobtrusive compared to most other AV applications, and free for anyone running a genuine copy of Windows.

I run Linux at home so I generally don't feel obligated to have anti-virus software. That said, I have been running this Microsoft 'Security Essentials' package at work for the last few months and I haven't encountered any problems with it.

This package lacks the quirks that some of the other free anti-virus packages have. The latest versions of AVG seem to be a bit more 'naggy' about buying their full version, and Avast has it's infamous 'virus definitions have been updated' audio message that will wake you up at midnight...

One thing to be aware of is that there is a feature integrated into Microsoft Security Essentials called 'Microsoft Spynet' which you cannot opt out of. It's disclaimer is a little worrisome as it basically says, "Yes, your personal identifiable information *may* be sent to Microsoft, but don't worry we won't do anything bad with it".
