Does DaVinci Resolve Studio 15.1.2 support NVLink?

Posted on October 31, 2018 by Matt Bach

Blackmagic has not made any announcements about DaVinci Resolve supporting NVLink, but we decided to try it out to see what happens. Unfortunately, you need to enable SLI in order for NVLink to work on the GeForce RTX cards which results in some major performance issues.

DaVinci Resolve 15: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Performance

Posted on October 22, 2018 by Matt Bach

DaVinci Resolve heavily leverages the GPU to improve performance which means that the new RTX cards should give excellent performance. This article is a follow-up to the RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti testing we did recently and adds results for the RTX 2070 8GB card.

Are the 9th Gen Intel Core Processors good for video editing?

Posted on October 19, 2018 by Matt Bach

Intel’s new 9th Gen Core Processors include both a small frequency bump and an increase in core count. Due to these improvements, these CPUs fare extremely well in video editing applications, performing close to 20% faster than the i7 8700K in many Adobe applications.

DaVinci Resolve 15: Core i7 9700K & i9 9900K Performance

Posted on October 19, 2018 by Matt Bach

DaVinci Resolve is a very GPU-intensive program, but that doesn’t mean that the CPU doesn’t matter. Depending on the amount of GPU power you have, even a mid-range CPU could perform the same as a more expensive CPU which makes the new 9th Gen CPUs from Intel very interesting for Resolve workstations with only a few GPUs.

Are the NVIDIA RTX video cards good for video editing?

Posted on October 1, 2018 by Matt Bach

The new RTX series from NVIDIA may not be great for Adobe applications, but they are great for DaVinci Resolve and are very interesting cards for the future due to two major new features: Tensor cores and RT cores.

DaVinci Resolve 15: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 & 2080 Ti Performance

Posted on September 28, 2018 by Matt Bach

DaVinci Resolve heavily leverages the GPU to improve performance which means that the new RTX cards should give excellent performance. What makes these cards even more interesting is the fact that Blackmagic has already stated that they will be using the new turing cores on these cards to “accelerate AI inferencing for graphics enhancement”.

Are 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPUs good for video editing?

Posted on September 21, 2018 by Matt Bach

AMD’s new 2nd Gen Ryzen Threadripper processors are absolute monsters, with the 2990WX in particular having 32(!) cores. But are they better than Intel for video editing?

DaVinci Resolve 15: AMD Threadripper 2990WX & 2950X Performance

Posted on September 19, 2018 by Matt Bach

DaVinci Resolve is a very GPU-intensive program, but it can still require a powerful CPU to match the amount of GPU power you may put into your system. We have seen diminishing returns with higher core count CPUs in the past, so the question is whether the 32 cores in the Threadripper 2990WX will increase performance or if you are better off with a lower core count CPU.

DaVinci Resolve 14: NVIDIA GeForce vs AMD Radeon Vega

Posted on August 7, 2018 by Matt Bach

DaVinci Resolve is able to heavily utilize the GPU (or multiple GPUs) to greatly improve performance, but are you better off using an NVIDIA GeForce card or an AMD Radeon card?.

DaVinci Resolve 14: iMac Pro & Mac Pro vs PC Workstation

Posted on May 15, 2018 by Matt Bach

With the rise of 4K, 6K, and even 8K footage, colorists using DaVinci Resolve are quickly discovering that the Mac ecosystem is simply not able to give them the performance they need. Most people know that they can get more out of a PC, but just how much faster is a PC versus a Mac Pro or iMac Pro?
