The Hardware Market in 2026
Huge investments in AI and datacenters, which began expanding rapidly in 2025, have led to a global shortage in the components needed for high-end RAM, storage, and GPUs. This has led to double- and triple-digit price increases across many hardware segments – and server-style RDIMMs have been especially hard-hit. That type of memory is also used in many workstation platforms, though, which has impacted the ability of businesses across industries to source the powerful systems they need.
The Challenge
We recently helped a client who is experienced with building their own systems, but doesn’t normally deal with workstation- or server-grade components. They needed a new testbed for imaging multiple drives at the same time – a critical part of their deployment pipeline. It also had to be rock-solid, with a lot of connectivity. These particulars put it outside the range of the hardware they were familiar with.
Instead of trying to track down all of the right parts and build on an unfamiliar platform, they turned to a company they trusted to provide this class of computer: Puget Systems. Our supply chain team has put a lot of work into maintaining relationships with OEMs and distributors, helping us keep product on the shelf despite the current shortages. The employee tasked with procuring this workstation had met some of our team members at a trade show, and was confident that we could handle what they wanted.
The Solution
One of the top requirements for this system, beyond reliability, was a lot of USB 3.2 ports. They opted for a Threadripper platform that provided eight USB Type-A ports on the rear, along with six more from the addition of a USB controller card in one of the PCIe slots. That lets them image 14 drives at a time, while still having a few more USB ports of other types available for peripherals.
In a follow-up message after receiving the system, this customer noted how it is able to image all 14 drives in under 30 minutes – a feat which previously required 2 or 3 separate test benches. They also called out the accessory box we provided with their computer, sharing their appreciation for the variety of what was included and clear labeling of each item and commenting that “…these little touches make a huge difference.”
