Powered by the ASUS Asus Z9PE-D16/2L, this beast of a server was designed to accommodate a staggering 24 SSDs, providing extreme performance and 24TB of SSD-based storage. The VMware ESXi operating system itself boots from a small flash module, leaving the disk array completely separate and easily managed. RAID functionality can be provided by the LSI controller through hardware RAID, or can be done via software RAID within the virtual machines.
The impressive features of this server don't stop with the SSDs. We have a total of 24 cores across two Intel Xeon CPUs from the new Ivy Bridge-EP generation, and a whopping 256GB of memory (it can be expanded to 512GB memory). In every way, this this server is equipped to provide extreme virtualization performance.
This Summit server also comes equipped with a redundant power supply, and an Asus ASMB6-IKVM, providing BIOS-level remote control and management similar to the earlier ASMB5-IKVM we reviewed. Since the SSDs do not need high airflow for cooling, we have also equipped this server with PWM ramping fans, providing more airflow when the CPUs are under heavy load, but also ramping down to a nice lower noise level when the CPUs are near idle.
