Genesis II

A very powerful dual-CPU workstation for media editing.

Puget Systems Professional Advice

Jon Bach (President)
Jon Bach (President) Says:
This is a beast of a workstation. Places like Dell and HP might churn out entry level PCs like a cookie cutting factory, but with high performance workstations, companies like Puget Systems can be really competitive and provide a better and more serviceable PC.
William George (Puget Labs Technician)
William George (Puget Labs Technician) Says:
The Genesis II is a very powerful dual-CPU workstation, with a wide range of options. If you are aiming for low noise operation, make sure to select the quiet modification package - and also to avoid adding loud components to the system. Specific things to watch out for are higher RPM hard drives (like the Western Digital RE series) and video cards that have loud fans. If you aren't sure of what to pick, save the design and then request a review or just call / email our sales consultants!
Jeff Stubbers (Technology Consultant Lead)
Jeff Stubbers (Technology Consultant Lead) Says:
The Puget Genesis II picks up where the Puget Genesis I left off, and doubles the potential performance. The Puget Genesis II is a platform that uses 2 CPUs, so you can configure (2x) Xeon processors in a single system. If you are running several programs, or very demanding programs designed to utilize multiple processors, you may want to consider one of these dual CPU systems for more available cores for your programs to utilize.
Chris Stephens (Vice President - Operations)
Chris Stephens (Vice President - Operations) Says:
If my paycheck was dependent on having a powerful computer to handle demanding programs, I would buy the Genesis. The Genesis II has two processors, but the benefits depend on the software you run. Before settling on a Genesis II, check with a Puget consultant to see what performance gains you would get with a two processor system.

Quote: Yes, we decided against upgrading to the shiny, expensive black "trashcan" that Apple is selling and went with a custom-built Genisis II 4K edit suite from Puget Systems. This affordable, upgradeable, high-speed machine allows me to edit 4K raw footage in real time and apply effects and grades right in my timeline - no playback rendering, no waiting. I hate waiting.

Quote: Besides the workstation itself, Puget Systems customer service, order process and status updates is second to none in our opinion. We simply have not seen any company that has a system in place like this. The first day when an email came over showing benchmark results and finial build pictures which FLIR pictures and BIOS screen shots impressed us. Every aspect of our order process was well thought out and provided us a great customer experience before we even received the machine.

Quote: The word is out. Professionals are looking for options. The PC building companies are taking notice. Users need horsepower. They need beefy graphics cards. They need room for third party hardware! The guys at Puget Systems were very interested in building machines that could compete with Apple and so over the past month, we teamed up to build an edit system that is both affordable and run's 4K footage in Adobe Creative Suite, as well as Davinci's Resolve.

The last time Jon Bach, president of Puget Systems, told me about one of his projects was back in 2009, and we published What Does A $16,000+ PC Look Like, Anyway? That was four quad-core Opterons with 32 GB of memory, and something like six terabytes of mechanical storage. Sixteen grand. In 2009. More recently, Jon sent over the details on a 16-core setup with 64 GB of DDR3-1600 for less than half as much ($7400). But the specs weren't even the highlight. Front and center was the fact that Jon was citing near-silent acoustic figures. As someone who has actually built workstations across several generations of processor architectures, I know this isn't easy. What follows is Jon's walk-through of Puget's Genesis II Quiet Edition.

Quote: Top to bottom, the components included are the kind of high quality that you'd expect. As I mentioned previously, this is the quietest workstation I've ever tested, an impressive feat when you look at the tremendous amount of performance on tap from the two CPUs. A series of intelligent component choices, smart engineering of the chassis, and an overall clean build allow the Genesis II Quiet to very effectively achieve what Puget Systems set out to do: build an incredibly fast system that produces virtually no noise. That everything runs as cool as it does is just an added bonus.

Quote: As your computer is being built and tested, you feel almost like you are there with them as they are putting each card into the chassie, and you stay informed by the updates in your PS account, as well as with e-mails that are sent if there are any issues that arise during the testing of the unit. I have to say that I was very, very impressed, and if I needed to purchase a "high-end" PC, whether it's for post production or not, PS is who I would go with.

The system included final test results with the tester's name so I'd know who to call if something went wrong (nothing did). It was a fun process, and the computer proved to be a real workhorse.

Quote: Puget Systems submitted the most unique system of the bunch, the Genesis II. The version we tested is built around Intel's S5520SC Shady Cove motherboard and a pair of 3.33GHz quad-core Intel Xeon W5590 processors, capable of processing a stunning 16 threads at once. As you'd expect, the Genesis II owned almost every test that favors the CPU, getting downright biblical on Cinebench R10.

"I bought a Serenity back in 2011 from you guys. I had done my own builds in the past for over 10 years prior, but this time I wanted a silent build, which I didn't have any experience with. Since then I've moved 3 times, gotten married, and am now a father to two wonderful children.

The Serenity sits in my living room hooked up directly to the TV for the last 9 years - still awesome, my strong silent companion. I've upgraded the hard drives and graphics card over time, and otherwise everything still works beautifully. It's the last desktop I've ever had to buy so far. Thanks for such a quality product!"

"I wanted a new well built computer for RDR2 so naturally Puget Systems was my first call. Puget is a surreal experience. You call and an actual human being answers the phone, puts up with all your stupid questions and finally places an order for you. The encounter with Puget form top to bottom was excellent. Of course as soon as the computer was delivered my ISP went down for three days, but everything eventually turned out great."

"Puget Systems is an INCREDIBLE company with an intense focus on customer service. Satisfying their customers through the process of building them a custom computer that meets their needs is definitely their passion and top priority. When we reached out to them to create custom workstations that met the demanding needs of our project THROWDOWN, they didn't bat an eye when we told them about the intense specification that our advanced virtual production workflow required! The process began with an in-depth interview where we revealed not only the hardware requirements, but also what software we were using, what aspects of our current computer systems left us unfulfilled and what we expected from our new workstations. All of this information helped them to create a custom configuration specifically to meet our needs. Once we made our final adjustments to the order, the build began and Puget Systems kept us informed every step of the way. I've never experienced such detailed customer service before! We would receive order status updates from specific employees letting us know what stage of the process we were in and when to expect the next updates. The brilliant technicians building our systems were fun and brought such positive energy when they were constructing and testing our computers. They'd even share images of the build with personal notes attached, which motivated our team! Knowing how much care and attention to detail was placed on the building of our workstations, inspired us to dream up even more ambitious virtual production filmmaking scenarios, because we knew that we'd have the hardware to pull it off and that it was specifically optimized to allow us to perform at our very best. The quality never stops with Puget Systems. They delivered our workstations in high quality protective packaging and we were able to unbox and setup easily, due to them sending ahead instructions, which were also included in the box within a three ring binder, as well as hardware and windows discs, and they even tossed in a USB recovery drive, just in case. Puget Systems provides PHENOMENAL CUSTOMER SERVICE and creates FANTASTIC COMPUTER SYSTEMS that allow us to achieve groundbreaking results. If you or a loved one is interested in a custom computer solution, look no further than PUGET SYSTEMS!"

"I feel I need to update my already positive testimonial about my purchase of a Puget Systems machine 7 months ago. Two days ago, I bought a new monitor that duplicated my primary display (a 27" Dell monitor, S2719DM with dual HDMI inputs) so that I could move seamlessly back and forth between both monitors for a planned webinar I am giving in about 10 days. My new machine has a NVidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super (8GB) card and when I plugged the new monitor into its display port (the primary was in the HDMI port), I was unable to get the full resolution from it. After searching the internet for a solution, I began to fear that something was wrong with a) me, or b) my software settings, or c) my hardware. So, I called support to speed up the process of finding a solution. Michael listened to my description of the problem, and through a process of my swapping cables and display port adaptor, suggested that my display port to HDMI adaptor was the bottleneck. He ordered me an "active" adaptor that he knew would do the trick (it was meant for 4K monitors), sent it to me from Amazon free of charge. It arrived this afternoon and, as I type this, both monitors are working flawlessly at the desired resolution. Problem solved! I bought a Puget Systems machine because of their reputation for customer service and support. I can only say that their reputation is well deserved. It's nice to know that, 7 months after I purchased my new system, the company is still helpful and responsive. I am one happy customer."

"I just watched a YouTube video about these guys, and posted a comment. Then I thought, "You know, since I've had such a great experience with them, I should post this on their site as well."

I discovered Puget Systems in 2015. Needing a new laptop, but wanting to stay with Win7, (because of being very comfortable using it, and NOT wanting any of the Win8 versions), wanting an SSD and a few other specific hardware choices, but mainly, NOT wanting all the bloatware that comes pre-packaged with a new computer..., I was striking out with the usual suspects.

So I thought about doing a search for Custom Computers, found Puget, and once I researched their philosophy (like how they test components, then only use the ones that fall well below generally-accepted failure rates), I could tell they were the company I wanted to buy from.

5 years later, and I've had to reach out to them only a few times..., they have been outstanding. The motherboard of my laptop failed a couple months ago (most likely due to my neglect), and even though it was out of production, they fixed me up with a MB that they had on-hand through some creative, outside-the-box thinking, that I doubt would've happened with any other company. I couldn't be happier with the support I've gotten from these guys.

They didn't try to sell me a new machine, answered all my questions, and my laptop is even slightly better than when I sent it in for repair. Puget Systems runs their business the RIGHT way, by building quality products, taking care of their customers, and building relationships with them. I WILL buy my next computer from them."

"To begin, I’m extremely impressed with Puget Systems customer service. They go the extra mile to communicate what is happening as they accept your order and build your custom computer. They posted regular updates as the computer was built and by using the names of the employees who were assigned the tasks, they helped to really make one feel that Puget Systems is not just a big faceless company and that my own needs were being addressed. I’ve never seen anyone do a better job.

I read reviews to see what other customers are saying and I’m often very irritated by reviews on the web site of a large online retailer where some customers will give a poor rating because of something ridiculous like the fact that they cut their finger when opening the shipping box. With Puget Systems I read reviews on their site and a photography forum unrelated to Puget Systems and the comments were impressive. Their systems were reported as performing well using the software of their choice. One was a little surprised that things worked so fast that he could no longer watch the progress while using stacking software. One was from a customer who had a part failure and he described in detail how helpful the company was in quickly resolving the problem. Others said that from their experiences that they would never switch. Should I have a problem with my purchase it will be wonderful to talk to someone who will not be reading from a script where the first action will be to ask me to clear my cache!

Their level of expertise is also very impressive. It had never occurred to me that I could work with someone who knew the software I was using, had selected components that would work best for that software, and that even ran some of their benchmark testing using features of the software. The person I first asked for recommendations was also a photographer and he knew from the specifications for my current system what the problems were and how to address them. I use Lightroom and Photoshop for my work and when I saw that they tested my build using a current version of Photoshop and the Smart Sharpen Filter I was impressed! Puget Systems has also published numerous papers describing their research, testing, and conclusions that are available to anyone, not just the customers who have already made a purchase. This was very helpful to me in making my configuration decisions.

When the computer arrived, it was packed as described and was in great shape. Puget Systems showed their level of care again as they included extra cables to connect my monitor and a bag of extra knurled screws in case I lost one. The system has met my expectations in that all of the choke points I was experiencing have gone away, software loads quickly, and the “Edit in Photoshop” transfer from Lightroom to Photoshop is performed so quickly that Photoshop doesn’t hang during the process and there is no waiting time.

I couldn’t be happier."

"What I wanted out of a new computer experience at this stage of my life is reliability. I wanted the confidence that when I hooked up the system the first time it would work and continue to work for a long time after. I've had the system now for a month and so far have been happy with it. I've been in the computer industry for the last 30 years so I knew what I wanted, so I did not have too much interaction with support when creating my system. The interaction I did have I was certainly happy with. And knowing I can talk with someone in the US if I need it, and that if the system needs fixed, there is no labor charge are both reassuring. My only gripe, if you want to call it that, is when the computer goes to sleep for some time, I need to press the power button for the computer to come out of sleep mode No big deal; if this is all I have to worry about, I'm happy! I was surprised to find a Windows CD with the binder, this is nice to have, and is practically unheard of today. You do pay a few hundred dollars more up front, but I believe having the support behind you at Puget systems is worth it."

"The best buying experience I have had in ANY industry. The essence of making a large online purchase is centered around communication. Puget Systems surpassed my expectations with constant and detailed communication. I NEVER had to inquire about a delay or any other issue because each phase of the buying. parts gathering, assembly, testing and QA was communicated nearly in real-time. I've been working in technology for nearly four decades and worked with hundreds of manufacturers/distributors for a variety of components and assemblies as well as finished products. The icing on the cake, is that the end product works as expected and better than advertised. Kudos to a well-run organization that cultivates loyal and repeat customers. I know I will be buying all my future computers from Puget Systems"
