Genesis II

A very powerful dual-CPU workstation for media editing.

Puget Systems Professional Advice

Jon Bach (President)
Jon Bach (President) Says:
This is a beast of a workstation. Places like Dell and HP might churn out entry level PCs like a cookie cutting factory, but with high performance workstations, companies like Puget Systems can be really competitive and provide a better and more serviceable PC.
William George (Puget Labs Technician)
William George (Puget Labs Technician) Says:
The Genesis II is a very powerful dual-CPU workstation, with a wide range of options. If you are aiming for low noise operation, make sure to select the quiet modification package - and also to avoid adding loud components to the system. Specific things to watch out for are higher RPM hard drives (like the Western Digital RE series) and video cards that have loud fans. If you aren't sure of what to pick, save the design and then request a review or just call / email our sales consultants!
Jeff Stubbers (Technology Consultant Lead)
Jeff Stubbers (Technology Consultant Lead) Says:
The Puget Genesis II picks up where the Puget Genesis I left off, and doubles the potential performance. The Puget Genesis II is a platform that uses 2 CPUs, so you can configure (2x) Xeon processors in a single system. If you are running several programs, or very demanding programs designed to utilize multiple processors, you may want to consider one of these dual CPU systems for more available cores for your programs to utilize.
Chris Stephens (Vice President - Operations)
Chris Stephens (Vice President - Operations) Says:
If my paycheck was dependent on having a powerful computer to handle demanding programs, I would buy the Genesis. The Genesis II has two processors, but the benefits depend on the software you run. Before settling on a Genesis II, check with a Puget consultant to see what performance gains you would get with a two processor system.

Quote: Yes, we decided against upgrading to the shiny, expensive black "trashcan" that Apple is selling and went with a custom-built Genisis II 4K edit suite from Puget Systems. This affordable, upgradeable, high-speed machine allows me to edit 4K raw footage in real time and apply effects and grades right in my timeline - no playback rendering, no waiting. I hate waiting.

Quote: Besides the workstation itself, Puget Systems customer service, order process and status updates is second to none in our opinion. We simply have not seen any company that has a system in place like this. The first day when an email came over showing benchmark results and finial build pictures which FLIR pictures and BIOS screen shots impressed us. Every aspect of our order process was well thought out and provided us a great customer experience before we even received the machine.

Quote: The word is out. Professionals are looking for options. The PC building companies are taking notice. Users need horsepower. They need beefy graphics cards. They need room for third party hardware! The guys at Puget Systems were very interested in building machines that could compete with Apple and so over the past month, we teamed up to build an edit system that is both affordable and run's 4K footage in Adobe Creative Suite, as well as Davinci's Resolve.

The last time Jon Bach, president of Puget Systems, told me about one of his projects was back in 2009, and we published What Does A $16,000+ PC Look Like, Anyway? That was four quad-core Opterons with 32 GB of memory, and something like six terabytes of mechanical storage. Sixteen grand. In 2009. More recently, Jon sent over the details on a 16-core setup with 64 GB of DDR3-1600 for less than half as much ($7400). But the specs weren't even the highlight. Front and center was the fact that Jon was citing near-silent acoustic figures. As someone who has actually built workstations across several generations of processor architectures, I know this isn't easy. What follows is Jon's walk-through of Puget's Genesis II Quiet Edition.

Quote: Top to bottom, the components included are the kind of high quality that you'd expect. As I mentioned previously, this is the quietest workstation I've ever tested, an impressive feat when you look at the tremendous amount of performance on tap from the two CPUs. A series of intelligent component choices, smart engineering of the chassis, and an overall clean build allow the Genesis II Quiet to very effectively achieve what Puget Systems set out to do: build an incredibly fast system that produces virtually no noise. That everything runs as cool as it does is just an added bonus.

Quote: As your computer is being built and tested, you feel almost like you are there with them as they are putting each card into the chassie, and you stay informed by the updates in your PS account, as well as with e-mails that are sent if there are any issues that arise during the testing of the unit. I have to say that I was very, very impressed, and if I needed to purchase a "high-end" PC, whether it's for post production or not, PS is who I would go with.

The system included final test results with the tester's name so I'd know who to call if something went wrong (nothing did). It was a fun process, and the computer proved to be a real workhorse.

Quote: Puget Systems submitted the most unique system of the bunch, the Genesis II. The version we tested is built around Intel's S5520SC Shady Cove motherboard and a pair of 3.33GHz quad-core Intel Xeon W5590 processors, capable of processing a stunning 16 threads at once. As you'd expect, the Genesis II owned almost every test that favors the CPU, getting downright biblical on Cinebench R10.

"I first purchased a desktop computer from Puget Systems in 2013. Over the next five years it performed beautifully, and when I had any minor issues I found the support staff at Puget to be readily available, knowledgeable, and most pleasant. That responsiveness was a major factor in my return to them when I decided recently to move on to a new desktop. The transition to a new machine was not an easy one for someone like myself who is not tech-oriented and once again support was immediately available in assisting me in that process. I have no reservations whatever in recommending Puget System to anyone who might ask."

"Puget Systems is the best of all the companies I have ever dealt with. I have experienced a great attitude, quality, attention to detail and excellence when I purchased my desktop. They have made me feel like I am part of the process.

Starting with their recommended system for Photoshop, two phone discussions led to my upgrading and subtracting items from their baseline system. The phone representatives were very straightforward, knowledgeable and helpful. They did not advise me to spend money for the sake of spending money; the goal was value for each item and, indeed, they pointed out one key area where a very modest change would significantly increase productivity. Thankfully they did not come across as salesmen.

As the unit was assembled, performance tested, examined in quality control (including a heat IR photo and a temperature graph, performance testing and 44 BIOS setting photos) and prepared for Fedex ground shipping I received informative updates. I placed my order late on a Monday and it was delivered to my home (1500 miles driving distance) Saturday of the following week. The boxing was impressive and the unboxing instructions were very thorough. A 3 ring notebook with performance testing results, original CD’s and recovery USB drive was included along with various cables and instructions for their use. And they also included extra hardware for potential future upgrades.

Nice complementary polo shirt. And I appreciated their complementary installation of my software preferences.

The desktop is very quiet (air cooled). A nice touch was a 3 week checkup email asking for comments and if I needed any assistance. The performance is superb and Photoshop works so smoothly. After using the computer for 3 weeks I’m very pleased with it and brag about it and Puget Systems to my friends."

"Puget Systems support team once again went above and beyond in helping me with my PC. I bought my Puget PC 7 years ago, needed to get a wireless adapter( I know, I know). I figured I'd email the support team for recommendations. I received a response within a half hour not only making a recommendation, but Ben(tech) told me he would send me one. No strings attached. Then offered to help me if I ran into problems with installation. Everything went well, no issues. Quality PC, and quality support. When I am ready to upgrade, I will order from Puget Systems. Try getting this type of support from Dell, HP, or Mac!
Thanks Ben, and Puget Systems, great job again!"

"I've bought a lot of computer equipment over the years. But I've never had an experience quite like dealing with Puget Systems. It's not just that the computer itself is stellar (although it is). It's the confidence that comes from dealing with a vendor that obviously knows their stuff and the ability to customize every detail and still get a system with the fit and polish of an off-the-shelf product.

I used to assemble computers from parts in the early days of the PC industry. I briefly considered purchasing parts and assembling a system myself to save a few bucks. Then I had a flashback to the endless tech support calls with parts vendors, the RMA numbers for returning defective components, the Russian roulette of whether a given set of components would work together seamlessly, browsing user forums trying to determine why I was getting some random error, etc. I decided that I am not a masochist. Dealing with a vendor who knows the current technology, has experience with the quirks of each component they use, and knows which components play well with others is invaluable. Add to that the thorough testing they do (which they share with you) and the overall buying experience and I would buy another system from Puget in a heartbeat.

I purchased the Serenity Pro system. It is as-advertised--so quiet that I have to check the light on the power button to see if it's on. Speed, build quality and delivery were exactly as promised. I couldn't be happier with a computer purchase."

"So, I had my desktop machine built by Puget Systems, in 2009. That\'s right, 10 years ago! Aside from memory and graphics card upgrades this box has been running like a charm, and will continue to do so (my son is exited to inherit it). Of course my new one is a system from Puget as well, and I\'m delighted that the service and attention to detail that Puget provides is at the same stellar level as it was 10 years ago. Following the build process through the status updates is an absolute delight, and I\'m very much looking forward to see my machine arrive next week."

"I had a difficult time looking for a good computer company. I cared about the performance and the uses for my next desktop. Never again will I get one from a big chain type of store, it had too much 'bloat-ware' and it did not last long. However, I happened to search for this computer company. After reading so many reviews from real people, watching videos, and reading information provided on the website, I decided to take action. I've coordinated with a staff member in sales, helped me get started on the process. Also, a great thing to know is that while the desktop was being built, statistics were provided, it was an amazing thing to see. To make a long story short, the shipment was very quick and when I first turned on the system, it was very silent, which I value too. An 'A plus' quality, would do business with them again in the future. Thank you!"

"This testimonial was written a little more than a year after purchasing my desktop system from Puget. Earlier on, I planned on writing an admiring, glowing, and full of praise description of both my buying experience and the initial performance of this new system. But, after reviewing some of the previous testimonials, I could see that praise was obviously not lacking and I thought that perhaps if I waited a while I might find something else of substance to write about. Something that might be more meaningful to new readers. Something that might include problems, issues, or disappointments. Well, a year has gone by and I have now tired of waiting. All has been good and all is still good. All the praises you will find in other testimonials do apply here, too. So, instead of repeating words like fast, quiet, cool, silent, stable, expertise, helpful, informative, I’ll leave only a few words that describe my reasons for choosing Puget Systems. Everyone has differing reasons. I hope mine are interesting or helpful to you.

I don’t use my computer for professional purposes. I use it mostly for personal enjoyment and have been purchasing home computers since the 1990’s. Or earlier. Can’t recall exactly when I got my first but I do know it was back when Radio Shack was selling their TRS-80 and Color Computers. Since then I’ve purchased or built several more and used them primarily to support my interest in photography. When I turned 80 years old (last year), I decided to treat myself with the PC of my dreams. After lots of research, I found Puget Systems. I described my photography needs/applications to Puget and they assisted in establishing the specs for what I purchased: a cool, quiet, fast, stable desktop computer. One of the previous testimonials that I read said: “Everything else (Dell, Lenovo, etc.) seems like a toy after you use a Puget Systems.” Perfectly put.

One additional comment: In all my earlier computers that I bought or built, I always found myself having to tweak the Windows operating system’s user settings as time went by. I almost think that Puget anticipated the user needs of someone like me and preset the optimum choices. All I know is that Windows 10 has performed flawlessly since day one. Maybe I should be giving the credit to Microsoft instead …. but I doubt it. All I know is everything is rock solid and I’m now a happy octogenarian."

"I tend to look for companies that do business the right way. Until finding Puget Systems, I hadn't found any in the PC business. Puget's builds priced favorably to the rest of the market, but the real value isn't just the well-designed systems, its the level of service. I gave Jeff a detailed list of needs and he guided me toward the right components and build. From then on, I was informed at every step of the process: who was working on my PC and what they were doing. The give tons of info on the parts they use and why, a wealth of info on my system (benchmarks, thermal imaging, etc.), and the final delivered product is flawless (it was so well packed, the FedEx guy who delivered it was impressed!) They provide an old-school binder manual, recovery disks and drive, and a flawlessly built PC -- tidy cable management, lots of efficient and quiet cooling, and great parts. The PC is fast, quiet (often inaudible), no bloatware, everything was installed and ready to go (including all available updates). It boots fast, it runs better than any previous PC I've owned, and I have no doubt it will be far more reliable also. Puget Systems does it right. I've paid premium prices before, but this is the first time I got equal value! My Puget PC doesn't look flashy, but it's a beast of a system, backed up by people who really seem to care about building a machine that does what I need. I've a hard time imagining buying a PC from anyone else ever again."

"Two things stand out for me when watching Jon's video giving an overview of Puget Systems. First, their sales staff actually will talk you down from more expensive systems. Frankly they've saved me over a thousand dollars. Second, his comments about transparency and relationships, by which he means trust. I bought a system from Puget nine years ago, and they supported me ever since. When I felt the need to modernize with a new system, there was only one company on my list of candidates."
