Genesis II

A very powerful dual-CPU workstation for media editing.

Puget Systems Professional Advice

Jon Bach (President)
Jon Bach (President) Says:
This is a beast of a workstation. Places like Dell and HP might churn out entry level PCs like a cookie cutting factory, but with high performance workstations, companies like Puget Systems can be really competitive and provide a better and more serviceable PC.
William George (Puget Labs Technician)
William George (Puget Labs Technician) Says:
The Genesis II is a very powerful dual-CPU workstation, with a wide range of options. If you are aiming for low noise operation, make sure to select the quiet modification package - and also to avoid adding loud components to the system. Specific things to watch out for are higher RPM hard drives (like the Western Digital RE series) and video cards that have loud fans. If you aren't sure of what to pick, save the design and then request a review or just call / email our sales consultants!
Jeff Stubbers (Technology Consultant Lead)
Jeff Stubbers (Technology Consultant Lead) Says:
The Puget Genesis II picks up where the Puget Genesis I left off, and doubles the potential performance. The Puget Genesis II is a platform that uses 2 CPUs, so you can configure (2x) Xeon processors in a single system. If you are running several programs, or very demanding programs designed to utilize multiple processors, you may want to consider one of these dual CPU systems for more available cores for your programs to utilize.
Chris Stephens (Vice President - Operations)
Chris Stephens (Vice President - Operations) Says:
If my paycheck was dependent on having a powerful computer to handle demanding programs, I would buy the Genesis. The Genesis II has two processors, but the benefits depend on the software you run. Before settling on a Genesis II, check with a Puget consultant to see what performance gains you would get with a two processor system.

Quote: Yes, we decided against upgrading to the shiny, expensive black "trashcan" that Apple is selling and went with a custom-built Genisis II 4K edit suite from Puget Systems. This affordable, upgradeable, high-speed machine allows me to edit 4K raw footage in real time and apply effects and grades right in my timeline - no playback rendering, no waiting. I hate waiting.

Quote: Besides the workstation itself, Puget Systems customer service, order process and status updates is second to none in our opinion. We simply have not seen any company that has a system in place like this. The first day when an email came over showing benchmark results and finial build pictures which FLIR pictures and BIOS screen shots impressed us. Every aspect of our order process was well thought out and provided us a great customer experience before we even received the machine.

Quote: The word is out. Professionals are looking for options. The PC building companies are taking notice. Users need horsepower. They need beefy graphics cards. They need room for third party hardware! The guys at Puget Systems were very interested in building machines that could compete with Apple and so over the past month, we teamed up to build an edit system that is both affordable and run's 4K footage in Adobe Creative Suite, as well as Davinci's Resolve.

The last time Jon Bach, president of Puget Systems, told me about one of his projects was back in 2009, and we published What Does A $16,000+ PC Look Like, Anyway? That was four quad-core Opterons with 32 GB of memory, and something like six terabytes of mechanical storage. Sixteen grand. In 2009. More recently, Jon sent over the details on a 16-core setup with 64 GB of DDR3-1600 for less than half as much ($7400). But the specs weren't even the highlight. Front and center was the fact that Jon was citing near-silent acoustic figures. As someone who has actually built workstations across several generations of processor architectures, I know this isn't easy. What follows is Jon's walk-through of Puget's Genesis II Quiet Edition.

Quote: Top to bottom, the components included are the kind of high quality that you'd expect. As I mentioned previously, this is the quietest workstation I've ever tested, an impressive feat when you look at the tremendous amount of performance on tap from the two CPUs. A series of intelligent component choices, smart engineering of the chassis, and an overall clean build allow the Genesis II Quiet to very effectively achieve what Puget Systems set out to do: build an incredibly fast system that produces virtually no noise. That everything runs as cool as it does is just an added bonus.

Quote: As your computer is being built and tested, you feel almost like you are there with them as they are putting each card into the chassie, and you stay informed by the updates in your PS account, as well as with e-mails that are sent if there are any issues that arise during the testing of the unit. I have to say that I was very, very impressed, and if I needed to purchase a "high-end" PC, whether it's for post production or not, PS is who I would go with.

Quote: I went through the typical buying process; pre-purchase conference, email notifications regarding the system's progress through manufacturing and testing, with thermal photographs showing the system's heat characteristics. The system included final test results with the tester's name so I'd know who to call if something went wrong (nothing did). It was a fun process, and the computer proved to be a real workhorse.

The safe bet is to go with an established manufacturer, taking advantage of seasoned design teams, combined experience of thousands of customers, and the serious buying power of a gigantic multinational corporation. Or, you could find a smaller boutique shop like Puget Systems, which will give you a world-class custom workstation such as its Genesis II, accompanied by personal service and hand-picked components, that might result in surprising performance.

Quote: Puget Systems submitted the most unique system of the bunch, the Genesis II. The version we tested is built around Intel's S5520SC Shady Cove motherboard and a pair of 3.33GHz quad-core Intel Xeon W5590 processors, capable of processing a stunning 16 threads at once. As you'd expect, the Genesis II owned almost every test that favors the CPU, getting downright biblical on Cinebench R10.

"What I wanted out of a new computer experience at this stage of my life is reliability. I wanted the confidence that when I hooked up the system the first time it would work and continue to work for a long time after. I've had the system now for a month and so far have been happy with it. I've been in the computer industry for the last 30 years so I knew what I wanted, so I did not have too much interaction with support when creating my system. The interaction I did have I was certainly happy with. And knowing I can talk with someone in the US if I need it, and that if the system needs fixed, there is no labor charge are both reassuring. My only gripe, if you want to call it that, is when the computer goes to sleep for some time, I need to press the power button for the computer to come out of sleep mode No big deal; if this is all I have to worry about, I'm happy! I was surprised to find a Windows CD with the binder, this is nice to have, and is practically unheard of today. You do pay a few hundred dollars more up front, but I believe having the support behind you at Puget systems is worth it."

"The best buying experience I have had in ANY industry. The essence of making a large online purchase is centered around communication. Puget Systems surpassed my expectations with constant and detailed communication. I NEVER had to inquire about a delay or any other issue because each phase of the buying. parts gathering, assembly, testing and QA was communicated nearly in real-time. I've been working in technology for nearly four decades and worked with hundreds of manufacturers/distributors for a variety of components and assemblies as well as finished products. The icing on the cake, is that the end product works as expected and better than advertised. Kudos to a well-run organization that cultivates loyal and repeat customers. I know I will be buying all my future computers from Puget Systems"

"I have nothing but positive things to say about my entire experience from the initial research phase to the ordering process to feedback on the system's build, benchmarking and shipping, and finally to follow up questions. I decided to purchase my new computer from Puget Systems because I was impressed with the company's ability to tailor-make a system that matched my software needs. I also wanted the customer service experience to be excellent at all stages of the process. I have not been disappointed at any point in the process. The system arrived a day early (from the projected arrival time) and worked as advertised right out of the box. When I called support and asked about adding two more drives to my build, the service personnel (not the techs) were able to call up records about my particular build so that they could give me precise directions about how to make the changes I requested. The support people at Puget Systems shipped me the necessary cables and brackets at no further cost to me and talked me through the installation process. Everyone I talked to was able to pull up my build and all were knowledgeable about what to do. It was a thoroughly satisfying experience. No one treated me like an idiot, everyone was patient, and all were effectively helpful. Well done! When I need to buy another specialized system, I will definitely contact Puget Systems first."

"Our company uses live broadcasts and webinars as a key customer acquisition and sales strategy, and our Puget-built rig has been running as our broadcast/filming machine like a champ for years now. Every time a webinar fails or a live broadcast doesn't work due to a system issue means thousands of dollars of losses for us, so reliability is key. In every way, from the buying experience to the rock-solid reliability, we can highly recommend Puget."

Customer info that is provided by the company is above and beyond what I have seen else where. Shipping packaging for my computer shows how far the company goes to satisfy the customers and protect their investment. I am extremely happy with my computer and know I received a very high end quality machine."

"The folks at Puget Systems keep their promises.

We purchased an Obsidian computer more than six months ago, attracted by the focus on reliability and the comprehensive replacement plan. We have had no significant problems with the system, except a single incident caused by a mistake on our end. During that single incident, in which we appeared to have a system defect, Puget responded promptly, first with extensive support by their customer service personnel, and shortly thereafter by next-day-mailing us the components needed to replace what appeared to be a piece of defective hardware. When the problem still wasn't fixed, they were on the verge of sending us a whole new computer, as their Obsidian model guarantee promised. Then we figured out it was actually a problem on our end, involving some equipment provided by a third party.

The take-away message, for us, was: the folks at Puget actually keep their promises. They said their Obsidian system would be reliable, and that if it failed anyway they would fix it quickly, even to the point of replacing the whole thing if necessary. And they lived up to that promise. In the end they didn't have to build us another computer, but they were on the verge of doing so when we figured out the third-party fault causing problems. Compared to other companies that have nice-sounding warranties which they don't live up to, Puget support is light-years ahead - they promise more, and they actually deliver.

For both the reliability of the system and the stellar customer service and support, we're very pleased we purchased a Puget Systems computer, and we will definitely look to Puget first next time we need a new system."

"Puget Systems is a very bright light in the otherwise dark and unfriendly world of customer support. They build great performing systems. They know their stuff. Most importantly they treat their customers in a very special way -- they acknowledge that you time is important. Today was good example: even though the tech support team was busy, the sales person that answered my call simply jumped in and got the service call started. When I later had to call back and my service adviser was on another line, the person who answered the phone didn't say "let me have him call you back." Instead they simply looked up the status of my call, jumped right in and walked me through the problem -- which turned out to be a failed monitor part; not Puget system's fault. This type of customer service is really hard to find and is even better from a Company that starts by building the best PC systems! Thank you!"

"IN 2009 I had a custom system built by Puget. Cost about $1100. Nothing super fancy
because I don't do heavy graphics or video or CAD work and such. But I wanted
a system that was built with high quality components. I wanted a SSD, which were not to common
at that time. A decent graphics card. I'm not a gamer but use a lot of stock analysis software.
I did not need massive HD space so the SSD has plenty of room for my apps. I wanted a solid
and high quality mother board and an Intel processor and cooling system that was not
top tier but just a step below. Ten years later this machine is still bullet proof, never had a
problem of any kind and as fast as I need it to be. Much faster that some of my friends
generic desktops that are much newer. I would not hesitate to have them build me
another but I don't even need a new desktop because their builds are so awesome."
