Genesis II

A very powerful dual-CPU workstation for media editing.

Puget Systems Professional Advice

Jon Bach (President)
Jon Bach (President) Says:
This is a beast of a workstation. Places like Dell and HP might churn out entry level PCs like a cookie cutting factory, but with high performance workstations, companies like Puget Systems can be really competitive and provide a better and more serviceable PC.
William George (Puget Labs Technician)
William George (Puget Labs Technician) Says:
The Genesis II is a very powerful dual-CPU workstation, with a wide range of options. If you are aiming for low noise operation, make sure to select the quiet modification package - and also to avoid adding loud components to the system. Specific things to watch out for are higher RPM hard drives (like the Western Digital RE series) and video cards that have loud fans. If you aren't sure of what to pick, save the design and then request a review or just call / email our sales consultants!
Jeff Stubbers (Technology Consultant)
Jeff Stubbers (Technology Consultant) Says:
The Puget Genesis II picks up where the Puget Genesis I left off, and doubles the potential performance. The Puget Genesis II is a platform that uses 2 CPUs, so you can configure (2x) Xeon processors in a single system. If you are running several programs, or very demanding programs designed to utilize multiple processors, you may want to consider one of these dual CPU systems for more available cores for your programs to utilize.
Chris Stephens (Vice President - Operations)
Chris Stephens (Vice President - Operations) Says:
If my paycheck was dependent on having a powerful computer to handle demanding programs, I would buy the Genesis. The Genesis II has two processors, but the benefits depend on the software you run. Before settling on a Genesis II, check with a Puget consultant to see what performance gains you would get with a two processor system.

Quote: Yes, we decided against upgrading to the shiny, expensive black "trashcan" that Apple is selling and went with a custom-built Genisis II 4K edit suite from Puget Systems. This affordable, upgradeable, high-speed machine allows me to edit 4K raw footage in real time and apply effects and grades right in my timeline - no playback rendering, no waiting. I hate waiting.

Quote: Besides the workstation itself, Puget Systems customer service, order process and status updates is second to none in our opinion. We simply have not seen any company that has a system in place like this. The first day when an email came over showing benchmark results and finial build pictures which FLIR pictures and BIOS screen shots impressed us. Every aspect of our order process was well thought out and provided us a great customer experience before we even received the machine.

Quote: The word is out. Professionals are looking for options. The PC building companies are taking notice. Users need horsepower. They need beefy graphics cards. They need room for third party hardware! The guys at Puget Systems were very interested in building machines that could compete with Apple and so over the past month, we teamed up to build an edit system that is both affordable and run's 4K footage in Adobe Creative Suite, as well as Davinci's Resolve.

The last time Jon Bach, president of Puget Systems, told me about one of his projects was back in 2009, and we published What Does A $16,000+ PC Look Like, Anyway? That was four quad-core Opterons with 32 GB of memory, and something like six terabytes of mechanical storage. Sixteen grand. In 2009. More recently, Jon sent over the details on a 16-core setup with 64 GB of DDR3-1600 for less than half as much ($7400). But the specs weren't even the highlight. Front and center was the fact that Jon was citing near-silent acoustic figures. As someone who has actually built workstations across several generations of processor architectures, I know this isn't easy. What follows is Jon's walk-through of Puget's Genesis II Quiet Edition.

Quote: Top to bottom, the components included are the kind of high quality that you'd expect. As I mentioned previously, this is the quietest workstation I've ever tested, an impressive feat when you look at the tremendous amount of performance on tap from the two CPUs. A series of intelligent component choices, smart engineering of the chassis, and an overall clean build allow the Genesis II Quiet to very effectively achieve what Puget Systems set out to do: build an incredibly fast system that produces virtually no noise. That everything runs as cool as it does is just an added bonus.

Quote: As your computer is being built and tested, you feel almost like you are there with them as they are putting each card into the chassie, and you stay informed by the updates in your PS account, as well as with e-mails that are sent if there are any issues that arise during the testing of the unit. I have to say that I was very, very impressed, and if I needed to purchase a "high-end" PC, whether it's for post production or not, PS is who I would go with.

Quote: I went through the typical buying process; pre-purchase conference, email notifications regarding the system's progress through manufacturing and testing, with thermal photographs showing the system's heat characteristics. The system included final test results with the tester's name so I'd know who to call if something went wrong (nothing did). It was a fun process, and the computer proved to be a real workhorse.

Quote: Looking for the fastest workstation in the world? The safe bet is to go with an established manufacturer, taking advantage of seasoned design teams, combined experience of thousands of customers, and the serious buying power of a gigantic multinational corporation. Or, you could find a smaller boutique shop like Puget Systems, which will give you a world-class custom workstation such as its Genesis II, accompanied by personal service and hand-picked components, that might result in surprising performance.

Quote: Puget Systems submitted the most unique system of the bunch, the Genesis II. The version we tested is built around Intel's S5520SC Shady Cove motherboard and a pair of 3.33GHz quad-core Intel Xeon W5590 processors, capable of processing a stunning 16 threads at once. As you'd expect, the Genesis II owned almost every test that favors the CPU, getting downright biblical on Cinebench R10.

"Trying to find a legitimate workstation that will handle Octane was a nightmare. After years on Mac, I looked at the iMac Pro and winced at the specs and the ridiculous price. No NVIDIA, over $12K for an adequate machine? After days looking, I found Puget Systems.

I am so glad I did. After making the call, Oscar was GREAT. I highly recommend Puget Systems and will never shop anywhere else. From the first call, I was hooked. The integrity, value and quality this company offers is exemplary.

Here’s a few bullet points on what makes Puget Systems easily the best place to go for custom workstations:

• They were nice. No talking over your head, no tech-nerd attitude. Just helpful and down to earth.
• They listen. They helped me transition from Mac to PC with little to no trouble and were very helpful with follow-up questions.
• They diagnose what you’ll need without trying to up-sell
• They have the best technology in stock, usually
• The wait time was minimal, two weeks from phone call to up and running in my case
• There’s a step-by-step progress report/checklist as your system is being made complete with what’s being done and who is doing it
• Most important, the system was EASY to set up
• AND it’s blazing fast
• AND the price was by far the best out there. In fact, they saved me money by helping me direct my budget toward the components that were most helpful for the applications I was using.
• They followed up to ensure everything is working properly
• Finally, the beards at PS are as impressive as the render times on my workstation

TL;DR Puget Systems should give other companies lessons in customer service, value and quality. I’m a fan and will be ordering from them again soon."

"There are no words to express the level of comfort and satisfaction having being a customer of Puget systems. The timely process from the confirmation of the order to the building of the machine and being informed at every stage. Excellent and knowledgeable support staff who are able to tailor the system specs to my specific need. The after sales support, even after two years of purchase they want to make sure every thing is ok with you. My system runs oil-smooth and is very silent for a big machine.Thank you Puget, you have a customer for life!"

"Purchased a Serenity system here six years ago. Recently damaged one of the front USB ports by accident, and sought out replacement options for the port module. Case manufacturer support advised the specific model (Antec P183) had been discontinued, and no parts available. Searched eBay, Amazon.com, Google, no solution. Checked the Puget site, and immediately found a replacement port module available at a reasonable price. I think it's a great testimonial of the ability of Puget Systems to provide product support after the sale!"

"I've been using custom built systems for sound and video editing for almost 10 years. This is my first purchase from Puget. The ordering process was simple and smooth and the sales technician was very knowledgeable. The system arrived on time and was well packaged. I've plugged it in and two things are apparent:
- it's wicked fast!
- it's insanely quiet!

Looking forward to working on this new system. Thank you Puget!"

"I've now bought two computers from Puget Systems and have no intention of going anywhere else. I used to build my own computers to meet my needs but have found the staff here to be so knowledgeable about each piece of equipment and what I actually need, that I trust them more than myself.
On my last purchase they talked me out of buying a more powerful PC. They assessed my needs and were able to help me identify what equipment would give me the best system to meet my particular needs, even though it meant I didn't spend as much with them. They also build these things really well. I don't think I've had a single hardware issue with the computers I've purchased from them. They also prepare them for me so that they are almost completely silent. I love it!

Even a couple of years after I put one of their computers into service they are ready to help and troubleshoot if problems arise. This is how I wish all companies were run. They have won my respect and have made me a very happy customer. Thank you Puget Systems!"

"Puget Systems has been an incredible experience. The best way to describe how I felt when I purchased my computer, was as if a company was formed just to build a personal computer for me. The way Puget Systems reach out to their customers on a personal level is outstanding. The step-by-step build process and updates left me not only excited, but kept me in the loop to ask any questions. I have recommended this place to friends and family and will continue to do so."

"This has been my best computer buying experience since my first computer - a Tandy 1000. I wanted a quality product to my specs without the extra junk that the big names put in their systems. Puget delivered in spades. Everything is quality and I know that the team cared about doing their best on my computer. It's rare to find people that will put their names and faces on their products, but Puget's team does. Their customer service is outstanding - taking the time to explain things as if they were just offering some friendly advice to their neighbor. I will never buy another desktop from another builder. Puget has made me a customer for life."

"Absolutely unbelievable experience! Viewing the whole assembly process and knowing who participated in assembly and testing is awesome. The first time in many years of buying and using computers I was able to see the results of the tests and performance benchmarks. The help provided by your sales and service teams was great. By the way, your website actually works and this also was a brand new experience for me. So to make a long story short you guys are the best and I would recommend Puget Systems to anybody who needs a new computer."

"I was in need of a powerful Windows machine, but one that was also quiet. I started going down the "build your own" route, but stumbled upon Puget Systems during my research, and was impressed with how readily they answered my questions and their willingness to review a build that would meet my needs. I took the plunge and ordered from them, and could not be happier that I did. This is the best P.C. that I've ever had the pleasure of working on. And it is *sooo* quiet! (My monitor literally makes more noise). I'll definitely be looking to Puget Systems for any future machines!"

"Puget Systems is a group of currently practicing experts in the field of applied high performance computing. I shopped around with other vendors while developing an invoice with Puget, but no one came close. Puget Systems had Ph.D level computer scientists who had used exactly the software I wanted to run on my computer, took the time to explain the latest in hardware to me, and was able to provide me with a performance benchmark with that software on a configuration very similar to the one I ordered. I like their spirit and they are technically excellent."
