Genesis II

A very powerful dual-CPU workstation for media editing.

Puget Systems Professional Advice

Jon Bach (President)
Jon Bach (President) Says:
This is a beast of a workstation. Places like Dell and HP might churn out entry level PCs like a cookie cutting factory, but with high performance workstations, companies like Puget Systems can be really competitive and provide a better and more serviceable PC.
William George (Puget Labs)
William George (Puget Labs) Says:
The Genesis II is a very powerful dual-CPU workstation, with a wide range of options. If you are aiming for low noise operation, make sure to select the quiet modification package - and also to avoid adding loud components to the system. Specific things to watch out for are higher RPM hard drives (like the Western Digital RE series) and video cards that have loud fans. If you aren't sure of what to pick, save the design and then request a review or just call / email our sales consultants!
Jeff Stubbers (Mr. Customer Service)
Jeff Stubbers (Mr. Customer Service) Says:
The Puget Genesis II picks up where the Puget Genesis I left off, and doubles the potential performance. The Puget Genesis II is a platform that uses 2 CPUs, so you can configure (2x) 4-core, (2x) 6-core, (2x) 8-core, on up to (2x) 22-core Xeon processors in a single system for a total of 44 logical cores for your programs. If you are running several programs, or very demanding programs, such as Adobe Premiere Pro, and the budget allows for it, you may want to consider one of these dual CPU systems for more available cores for your programs to utilize.
Chris Stephens (Vice President - Operations)
Chris Stephens (Vice President - Operations) Says:
If my paycheck was dependent on having a powerful computer to handle demanding programs, I would buy the Genesis. The Genesis II has two processors, but the benefits depend on the software you run. Before settling on a Genesis II, check with a Puget consultant to see what performance gains you would get with a two processor system.

Quote: Yes, we decided against upgrading to the shiny, expensive black "trashcan" that Apple is selling and went with a custom-built Genisis II 4K edit suite from Puget Systems. This affordable, upgradeable, high-speed machine allows me to edit 4K raw footage in real time and apply effects and grades right in my timeline - no playback rendering, no waiting. I hate waiting.

Quote: Besides the workstation itself, Puget Systems customer service, order process and status updates is second to none in our opinion. We simply have not seen any company that has a system in place like this. The first day when an email came over showing benchmark results and finial build pictures which FLIR pictures and BIOS screen shots impressed us. Every aspect of our order process was well thought out and provided us a great customer experience before we even received the machine.

Quote: The word is out. Professionals are looking for options. The PC building companies are taking notice. Users need horsepower. They need beefy graphics cards. They need room for third party hardware! The guys at Puget Systems were very interested in building machines that could compete with Apple and so over the past month, we teamed up to build an edit system that is both affordable and run's 4K footage in Adobe Creative Suite, as well as Davinci's Resolve.

The last time Jon Bach, president of Puget Systems, told me about one of his projects was back in 2009, and we published What Does A $16,000+ PC Look Like, Anyway? That was four quad-core Opterons with 32 GB of memory, and something like six terabytes of mechanical storage. Sixteen grand. In 2009. More recently, Jon sent over the details on a 16-core setup with 64 GB of DDR3-1600 for less than half as much ($7400). But the specs weren't even the highlight. Front and center was the fact that Jon was citing near-silent acoustic figures. As someone who has actually built workstations across several generations of processor architectures, I know this isn't easy. What follows is Jon's walk-through of Puget's Genesis II Quiet Edition.

Quote: Top to bottom, the components included are the kind of high quality that you'd expect. As I mentioned previously, this is the quietest workstation I've ever tested, an impressive feat when you look at the tremendous amount of performance on tap from the two CPUs. A series of intelligent component choices, smart engineering of the chassis, and an overall clean build allow the Genesis II Quiet to very effectively achieve what Puget Systems set out to do: build an incredibly fast system that produces virtually no noise. That everything runs as cool as it does is just an added bonus.

I have to say that I was very, very impressed, and if I needed to purchase a "high-end" PC, whether it's for post production or not, PS is who I would go with.

The version we tested is built around Intel's S5520SC Shady Cove motherboard and a pair of 3.33GHz quad-core Intel Xeon W5590 processors, capable of processing a stunning 16 threads at once. "This was by far the most painless a custom PC has ever been (waiting for it was the hardest part, and that wasn\'t even too long!). From the very beginning, I spoke with a real person who was able to answer all of my questions completely honestly. I had one question about a processor upgrade and whether it would be worth it for gaming - the answer was an extremely honest \"no.\" Instead of up-selling me on something I didn\'t need, they gave me exactly what my machine needed to perform the way I wanted it to. I will most likely be buying all of my high-end rigs through Puget from now on."

"Did you ever call technical support for a major computer manufacturer and swear you were talking to someone in a crowded train station in Bombay, India? Did you understand every word they spoke while they "thanked you so much" for everything but solved nothing after 7 hours and a couple two, three disconnects and start overs. I am a DJ in upstate, NY. About 4 years ago, I knew I was going to need a new reliable computer to do audio production and presentation, and I was all done with the Computer Biggie's blues. I knew nothing of custom computers so I did a lot of research, and everything pointed to Puget Systems. I too thought that they sounded "too good to be true". I spent some time on the phone talking to their sales and technical service dept, but the thing that sealed the deal for me is their LIFETIME!!!! free technical support with an actual person who's primary language is English. I'll let you in on a little secret, this computer had some display problems that were difficult to diagnose and solve when I first got it. I sent it back twice, but they couldn't duplicate the issue thus they tried possible fixes that worked for awhile then more problems. The third time I sent it back (technically out of warranty) they paid overnight shipping round trip from New York to Auburn, Washington, and didn't charge me for anything. See if one of the biggies can say they do that. The second It came back, I knew I was using the best computer I ever owned. Over time, I've quadrupled the RAM, added a 2T second internal drive for my music library and grudgingly said goodbye to Windows 7 x 64 bit. I did the upgrades/installations myself, but before, during and after the upgrades, I called MY Puget tech team for specifications, compatibility and install/usage guidance. They were right there then, and they're right there now. I'll let you in on another little secret. This computer was spec'ed and built to process and play music and videos. It's getting close to 5 years old, and I'll soon be needing to spec the latest and greatest in a rack mount application. It just so happens that in talking to their tech team, I learned that they are focusing on developing just that type of setup. I could build my own with what I've learned about computers but, honestly, It's a no brainer to me to not have their expertise, warranty and more lifetime tech support. It just can't get any better than that. Too good to be true, not so much, but true as true gets!"

"I would recommend Puget Systems to anyone looking for a computer that is built to meet their specific needs AND built to last.
I purchased a custom system from Puget in August 2014. I wanted to wait a while before writing a review. Well, here we are 3 years later and I am finally writing that review:
I could not have had a better experience. Before I found Puget Systems, I had been buying computers since the 1980s, always well known computer brands. That was not a bad approach for the most part, but I now knew that I wanted a system that had the performance I needed for my workflow without the unnecessary bells & whistles aimed at gamers and without all the bloatware that comes with most computers from the big brands. At the same time, I wanted to feel comfortable that I was making the right hardware and software choices and that I'd have the necessary support if something went wrong.
So I started researching my options online and came upon Puget Systems. I was impressed by the detailed information they provided on their website -- not only about their product, but about their company, their philosophy, and their people (those PEOPLE are a huge part of their success). In addition, there was a ton of information about computers on their website. This information helped me understand what I really needed to focus on to best meet my needs. I started configuring a system and was impressed with their dedicated support during the sales process. William George was very responsive to my many questions via email, making recommendations on what I'd need without overselling in any way. In fact, he convinced me to scale back my choices on a couple of things in order to save me some money. Once we had settled on all the specifics, I loved getting photos of the system before it was shipped. Even more, I loved getting a binder with photos, a video, and excellent documentation and test results for MY unique system when the computer arrived. I still have that binder right next to the computer, so that it's handy when something breaks. But nothing has broken and I've had no need to contact Puget. The system is still performing very well. The Puget website is still chock full of useful information that was never presented by other sellers when i bought other systems.
The biggest risk for me to consider was that Puget is so far away and if something went wrong with the hardware I could be stuck for a while. I was given the option to purchase an onsite support contract. But I had decent backup systems, both online and offline, and another computer I could switch to in a pinch, so I decided not to buy the additional insurance. Fortunately, I have not had a need to test my backup scheme in spite of my heavy use of the system for the past 3 years.
I repeat:
I would recommend Puget Systems to anyone looking for a computer that is built to meet their specific needs AND built to last."

"This is my fourth testimonial for the same PC which was bought in January 2012. nearing 6 years ! It is still strong and problem free.
I allowed a friend of a neighbor use my PC once. He is a senior IT support at the University of Maine (Orono) He sat down in my chair looked up at the PC that was firing up and stared in amazement at it's beauty and design. He said : "wow ! where did you get this?" Honestly folks, I can't imagine buying a PC from any other company. Their customer service is far and beyond any CS i have ever dealt with anywhere, for anything, ever. I had a problem that was nothing to do with the PC but, related to software that I had installed. I called them for help. I gave them remote control of PC and the technician quickly fixed my problem. I don't have the words to express how remarkable this company is."

"I received my Genesis I a few weeks ago and wanted to use it for a while before posting a review. Although it isn\'t touted as their quiet system, it is extremely quiet. I am one of those people that is really picky about system noise and this system is just super quiet. This is also the fastest system I have ever owned, it is also the most expensive but it does contain a lot of the latest technology. I got tired of getting systems that I couldn\'t configure to my needs, or that came with a bunch of software that I didn\'t want. I did a lot of research online about what company could provide me with a system that would fit my needs. Those needs being fast, quiet, and reliable. I am using it primarily for video and photo editing.

The box that it came in was huge, but I\'d rather have a huge box than a damaged one. I also liked that as soon as I opened it, I immediately saw instructions on how to proceed with the rest of the unboxing. Little things that help.

Inside is a binder full of helpful information that is a really nice touch too.

During my agonizing decision making process, I exchanged several e-mails with the company asking questions and getting feedback. This was also very helpful in making my decision.

So far I am very happy with my purchase."

"I just received my Puget System PC today. I must say that from start to finish it has been an incredible experience. Never have I experienced such top notch customer service! Emails are answered promptly. The meticulous detail involved in the builds are impressive. I had a lot of customization requirements and all was accomplished without difficulty. I had a previous frustrating experience with another large PC builder and while they tried to do the best they could I ran into a lot of difficulties and the lack of communication was a major issue. No problems like that here. I feel that if I do run into problems I can easily get the answer from Puget Systems and have full confidence in them. They really make you feel special and the transparency with giving you all the details of the build as its happening as well as pictures of the bios and of your system with thermal imaging etc is quite impressive. Also, the system is so quiet. I am thoroughly impressed with the company and Jeff Stubbers for all his help. I am a customer for life!

"Puget systems made the process of purchasing a system very easy! I was looking into purchasing my first computer system. I am not very savy with all the components that go into a great system, but Puget walked me through it every step of the way. In particular, I worked with their representative Jeremy. I told him exactly what I wanted out of the system, as well as my budget. He came back with a few suggestions on what would best fit my needs. There was not any pressure at all throughout this process. I had every question and concern answered confidently. I will definitely go back to them for any computer needs in the future!"

"This is the first one of three video workstations that I've bought in the last 10 years that is acceptably quiet. The other two I've bought from other vendors had fans that ended up sounding like tanks. I did go with the quiet fans and case modifications just to be sure, but it would probably be quiet even without those. Excellent, relevant research articles and advice. Fun to see the 'real-time' progress in assembly and test. Would definitely recommend."

"My experience with Puget Systems has been the best in about 35 years of buying or building personal computers. Configuring a system on the web site was easy using the extensive information and expert recommendations for each component. The smart system designs optimize power, sound, and heat management. The detailed status updates as my system was being built was quite interesting--I got to virtually look over the shoulder as the build, configuration, test, and burn-in steps proceeded. All performance test results are available for viewing. My very well-packaged Serenity system arrived in perfect condition and powered up off the fast SSD drive (a first for me). It took less than a day to migrate 50,000 images and a few dozen applications and everything is working perfectly and quietly. I confidently recommend Puget Systems to anyone looking for a custom system in this class."
