Background on Intel Xeon E7 v3 CPU
Intel's E7 v3 series of Xeon processors are based on the Haswell EP architecture, and utilize the same socket 2011 for mounting. These are the top-end of the modern Xeon line in terms of the number of supported CPUs in a single system, allowing for 4-way or 8-way operation... though the motherboard we use here at Puget is limited to 4 physical CPUs. Still, that allows for up to 72 actual processing cores - or 144 threads, thanks to Intel's Hyperthreading technology.
Quad-channel DDR4 memory per CPU is supported, just as with the dual processor Xeons, allowing for massive amounts of RAM and high memory bandwidth to keep all those cores fed with data. The size of motherboard required to fit four sockets and the accompanying RAM slots means that only the largest cases can fit a system built on this architecture.
