IrisVR Prospect System FAQ
To use IrisVR software, such as Prospect, you’ll need to have two things - a powerful computer and a VR headset.
Below you can find commonly asked questions about selecting the right hardware for a workstation, as well as setting it up for use with IrisVR.
What VR headsets will this system work with?
What specs are important to providing a smooth experience with IrisVR?
A smooth VR experience can be very taxing on your hardware. As a result both the CPU and GPU are important but because of the need to run two displays (one for each eye) at very high refresh rates the demands on the video card (GPU) is the most intensive. For the processor, keeping clock speed as high as possible is key - with the number of cores being less important, though it can impact other applications you might use alongside IrisVR Prospect, such as Revit or Navisworks.
Will these systems perform well with large and complex 3D files?
Yes, these computers have been tested under heavy load for extended periods. We do similar testing with every computer we build, to ensure that they will operate under stressful usage without overheating.
How much system RAM do I need?
The minimum recommended by us is 16GB, however 32GB is the optimal specification when running large or complex 3D models. Please note, that HTC and Oculus list the minimum as 8GB but this is typically not sufficient for running multiple professional software packages, like Prospect, Revit, Rhino, etc.
Do I need a solid state drive (SSD)?
Your VR experience will not be affected by having an SSD. They do affect how quickly programs load and moving between different applications, because of this they are a highly recommended for professional grade computers.
Should I get an overclocked system?
No - overclocking is really not needed, as the stock clock speeds on the processors we offer are plenty fast enough for a smooth experience. Overclocking also uses more power, adds heat, increases noise, and decreases reliability.
Will these systems work for other VR and non-VR applications too?
Yes! Any system that can handle IrisVR Prospect and Scope will also do well with a variety of other standard applications. If using very specialized software, please contact our consulting staff for help designing the right computer for your needs.
We plan to travel with our VR system - do you have a portable computer option?
The Advanced IrisVR Workstation has an optional carry-on size luggage accessory, allowing it to be easily and safely transported with you by car or plane. Please note that due to the sensitive nature of computer hardware, and how airlines often treat baggage, we do NOT recommend checking it as luggage on a flight.
Which virtual reality headset should I be purchase?
The two leading VR headsets are the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. Which headset is best for you will vary based on the following factors - how much physical space you have, do you prefer a seated or standing experience, and if you have a dedicated space for setting up the headset. I have an HTC Vive Pro - which computer is best for me?
The HTC Vive Pro requires a more powerful computer than the HTC Vive due to the higher resolution in the headset. As a result, we recommend purchasing the Advanced IrisVR Workstation.
Can I purchase my VR headset through Puget?
At this time, Puget Systems does not resell VR headsets. We do offer some basic peripherals, like keyboards, mice, and monitors - but our systems are designed to industry standards so that you can connect almost any Windows compatible devices, including various VR headsets.
What software should I have installed on the computer?
Apart from any professional specialized software that you’ll be using, such as Revit, Rhino, or Sketchup, we suggest installing the following: Adobe Reader for viewing PDFs and GeForce Experience for updating graphics drivers. Both of these can be selected for installation by Puget Systems, if you so desire. You will also need either Steam for HTC Vive or Oculus Home for Rift headsets.
My computer is setup and VR headset installed - what’s next?
The next step is to setup your computer with a subscription to IrisVR software. If you haven’t tried IrisVR Prospect or Scope before, you can start a free 45-day trial and download the software. Or if you have already purchased the software, then you can proceed to irisvr.com/downloads to install it on the new computer.
