Puget Systems Description

This enclosure wraps a hard drive in both noise-dampening padding as well as a metal heatsink - helping to keep it quiet while not just trapping heat in. It does require used of a 5-1/4" drive bay, though, so keep that in mind when configuring a computer.

You have to be a little careful about airflow with these -- stacking a bunch of them on top of each other in CDROM bays will cause some pretty serious heat issues. But as long as you space them out, they are a good way to quiet down your hard drive access noise.

I have the older generation of this enclosure at home. If you're configuring an extra-quiet computer, or the sound of a crunching computer drives you nuts, then this thing is perfect. It's a touch expensive but for some of us, a quiet computer is priceless. However, I don't recommend one of these unless the rest of your system is using only quiet hardware. No point silencing your hard drive if you have a really loud video card!

In my system, I have been running a 74gb Raptor Hard Drive for a few years. I haven't had any problems with temperatures or with my hard drive.

Unless you are extremely sensitive to noise, I wouldn't bother with this. The drives we use are quiet to begin with, so I rather see you save money and or put the money you would have put on this elsewhere.

Hard drives are actually getting quieter and quieter these days, so to me this particular device is becoming less necessary. If you are running a noisier drive, like one of the older Raptors, then it is a good idea - or if you are looking for that last step to take in quieting a computer down.
