Puget Systems has become aware of a firmware issue affecting all Micron 7450 and 7500 PRO NVMe SSDs. This article aims to raise awareness of the issue and help prevent further drive failures. Although the risk is relatively low – we have seen an average failure rate of ~2% across all models so far – the impact of a failure can be high. We strongly recommend updating all Micron 7450 and 7500 PRO series drives to the latest firmware version as soon as possible.
Symptoms
Micron 7450 and 7500 drives on firmware versions E2MU200 or E3MQ000 will seemingly randomly enter a ‘panic’ state in which I/O operations become impossible. This means the drive and its data become completely inaccessible, with no known way to recover the drive. The data may be recoverable via professional third-party data recovery specialists, though we have not verified this.
Cause
A faulty firmware version has been identified as the cause. We don’t have any further details at this time.
Solution
The only known way to prevent the issue is to preemptively update the firmware to the latest version (listed below as of the publishing of this article). If your drive enters a panic state, updating the firmware becomes impossible – and the drive cannot be recovered.
