What do you need to know?

When you build your own laptop, there are many things you need to consider. In addition to the questions of performance and budget that you have with a desktop computer, there are other factors to consider:

1) Unit-specific features
2) Size and portability
3) Battery life

These three additional factors can make it difficult to find the perfect custom laptop suited perfectly for you. Because there is less opportunity to add to or modify a laptop / notebook computer, you first need to think about all the ports you'll be needing (ie, firewire, USB, sound and video). If a laptop doesn't have all the ports you need, you shouldn't consider it! Once you've worked that out, you have to ask yourself whether the unit is intended to be highly portable, or if it is intended to be at a desk most of the time. Remember that a larger screen and higher performance components mean reduced battery life.

For general office applications, you can easily get away with a low performance laptop, with which you will have good portability and long battery life. For more intense tasks like video editing or gaming, you may need a much more high performance laptop, which will be larger, heavier, and will have a shorter battery life.

Fortunately, we're here to help you! As a custom systems builder, helping you sort through all the choices and decisions is our specialty. Take the general advice we give above, and then configure a custom laptop to your hearts content by simply clicking on the customize button. If you feel you need help, just click "Submit for Review" when you are done configuring everything as best you can. We're happy to help!
