Consultant’s Corner: The DNA of Storage

Exploring Storage Tech

A well-known reseller recently approached us with a challenge. One of their customers needed a 1U rackmount server to support StorageDNA’s DNAfabric platform.

This was not software our Labs team had tested, nor had our sales team previously sold a server for this purpose. While we offer our own line of storage servers, they run OSNexus QuantaStor, so for this customer’s specific StorageDNA use case, we needed to find an alternative solution from among the qualified products we carry.

The Challenges

First, we worked with the reseller to gather as much information as we could about their customer’s needs, previous orders, and the environment in which the server would be deployed.

Then, since we had no prior experience with DNAfabric, we decided to dive deeper into the opportunity and contact StorageDNA directly to see whether they could provide guidance on how best to optimize our hardware for their software. We scheduled a meeting with a technical resource from StorageDNA, and during that discussion came up with several options based on the customer’s requirements and budget. After some back-and-forth, we were ready to propose our solutions to the customer. Without input from StorageDNA, this project wouldn’t have moved forward!

The Solution

We proposed two options to the customer: one that would meet their needs today at a lower price point, and a more expensive option that would be able to scale up to handle a bigger load in the future. The customer anticipated growth over the next few years, and decided on the higher-performance option.

  • MSI 1U Server System
  • AMD 8-core Processor
  • 96GB DDR5 RAM
  • 2x 960GB M.2 SSDs
(RAID 1 mirror for the OS / software)
  • 2x 2TB SATA SSDs
(RAID 1 mirror for local storage)
  • ATTO 8-port External SAS/SATA Controller

StorageDNA not only helped us optimize hardware options but also assisted in configuring specific storage provisioning to ensure top performance for the customer’s workflow. The collaboration between StorageDNA and Puget Systems was instrumental in meeting the customer’s needs and providing a product they can feel confident in for years to come.
