Photoshop performance: PC Workstation vs Mac Pro (2019)
Apple’s new Mac Pro is a very slick and sturdy machine, but does its high price translate to better performance in Photoshop?
HPC Parallel Performance for 3rd gen Threadripper, Xeon 3265W and EPYC 7742 (HPL HPCG Numpy NAMD)
On March 19, 2020 I did a webinar titled,
“AMD Threadripper 3rd Gen HPC Parallel Performance and Scaling ++(Xeon 3265W and EPYC 7742)”
The “++(Xeon 3265W and EPYC 7742)” part of that title was added after we had scheduled the webinar. It made the presentation a lot more interesting than the original Threadripper only title! This is a follow up post with the charts and plots of testing results presented in that webinar.
Sound Issues – Windows 10 + MSI Z390
Recently we have run into audio issues in Windows 10. It seems to only affect systems built before January 2020 with the MSI Z390 GAMING EDGE AC.
Webinar: AMD Threadripper 3rd Gen HPC Parallel Performance and Scaling (video)
In this 45 minute webinar, William George will go over the major components that go into a workstation, explaining what each does and how they impact SOLIDWORKS performance. Our goal is to equip you to select the right hardware in your next engineering system, and we’ll make time at the end for a brief Q&A time as well.
Webinar: AMD Threadripper 3rd Gen HPC Parallel Performance and Scaling
In this 45 minute webinar, Dr. Donald Kinghorn will go over recent HPC testing on the latest AMD Threadripper processors. These extraordinary many-core processors present opportunity and challenges for high performance workstation use. The talk will present testing results and methods. Bring your questions and curiosity!
Threadripper 3990x vs 3970x Performance and Scaling (HPL, Numpy, NAMD plus GPUs)
Is 32-cores enough? I had some testing time again on an AMD Threadripper 32-core 3970x and thought it would be interesting to compare that to the 64-core 3990x. In this post I take a comparative look at parallel performance and scaling for HPL Linpack, Python numpy and the NAMD molecular dynamics program.
SOLIDWORKS 2020 SP1 CPU Performance
With the recent release of SOLIDWORKS 2020’s first service pack, as well as multiple new CPU launches from Intel and AMD in the past few months, we thought it would be a good time to do a roundup of processor performance in modeling, rendering, and simulations within SOLIDWORKS.
SOLIDWORKS 2020 SP1 GPU Performance
With the recent release of SOLIDWORKS 2020’s first service pack, we thought it would be a good time to do a roundup of NVIDIA Quadro video card performance with regards to modeling in SOLIDWORKS.
Threadripper 3990x 64-core Parallel Scaling
64 cores is a lot of cores! How well will parallel applications scale on that many cores? The answer, of course, is, it depends on the application. In this post I look at Amdhal’s Law parallel scaling for HPL Linpack, Python numpy and the NAMD molecular dynamics program.
PugetBench for Adobe Creative Cloud
The free version of our benchmarks allow individuals to evaluate the performance of their own systems in popular Adobe Creative Cloud applications like Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Premiere Pro, and After Effects. However, for commercial use (system reviewers, hardware/software developers, workstation manufacturers, etc.), we have but specific commercial use versions that include features that are often desired such as command line automation, result logging, and email support.
