Threadripper is the name of AMD's high-end desktop (HEDT) processor line, aimed at demanding workstation applications. These chips offer massive numbers of cores, and applications like ray-tracing which can scale well across all of those cores will see unrivaled performance.
Besides pure processing power, these CPUs also support quad-channel memory and enough PCI-Express lanes to hook up multiple GPUs, high-speed SSDs, and other expansion cards. If you are looking for a scaled back option, but still with solid performance and a good feature set, check out the more mainstream AMD Ryzen models.
AMD's 3rd Gen Threadripper processors use the new Zen 2 microarchitecture, bringing substantial improvements over the previous models in this family. The Threadripper line already featured very high core counts, and combined with massively better per-core performance, these are very powerful workstation CPUs.
