Working from home has presented some unique challenges and benefits that I wasn’t expecting. I’ve only been doing it for the past six weeks or so but I’ve learned a lot. It’s taken a shift in mindset and the creation of a whole new set of habits.
Like most of my colleagues, working from home isn’t foreign to me. I have been working remotely for 1-2 days out of the week for the past ~4 years. I never really thought much of it aside from it being more of a self-paced workday.

I wasn’t there, but I’m pretty certain when the principals of my kids’ school announced that school would be closed for a while, they cheered. Now a month into the school closures, they don’t appear to be too happy.
With Washington state under the new “Stay Home, Stay Safe” proclamation, I have now been working out of my home office for about 4 weeks. And just the other day, this order was extended another 30 days. So we’re in this for the long haul. In the spirit of helping those who are either working from home for the first time, or simply not used to doing so full time, I thought I would share my setup, how I’ve adjusted, and what I’ve learned along the way.

Nearly seven years ago, I began working remotely when I moved my family from Auburn, Washington to St. George, Utah. I knew a few people who worked from home, but the practice wasn’t as accepted by in 2013 as it is today. Given my background in software, I spent a few weeks researching the tools that I’d need to make the transition to a home office. That I worked for a tech-savvy manager and owner at Puget Systems, helped immensely, and both showed a lot of patience as I worked through gathering the right hardware and software tools to do my job.
