TL;DR: AMD Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series performance in V-Ray
For CPU-based rendering, AMD’s Threadripper PRO has long been the best choice. This new generation of CPUs widens AMD’s lead even further. With rendering scores increasing by 25% or more, this new generation of Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series CPUs is truly something V-Ray users can get excited about.
When AMD announced the Threadripper Pro 5000 WX-Series of CPUs several months ago, it was no surprise V-Ray users were very excited. AMD’s Threadripper PRO line of CPUs quickly became the go-to option for CPU rendering, due in large part to its high core counts (up to 64 cores and 128 threads), 8 channel memory support, and up to 2TB of total RAM. While GPU rendering has grown in popularity, many still rely on the CPU due to the much higher RAM capacity for larger scenes, or to use alongside the GPU to squeeze out every last bit of performance from their systems.
In this article, we will be using the V-Ray Benchmark from Chaos to examine the performance of the new AMD Threadripper PRO 5000WX CPUs and compare them to the previous generation of Threadripper PRO, as well as Intel’s Xeon line. High-core count CPUs always do exceptionally well in CPU rendering. As we can see from the chart, the IPC and boost clock improvements AMD made to this generation of CPUs have given the new 64-Core 5995WX a 25% increase in performance over the previous generation. This is a fantastic result for a new CPU that can slot into existing motherboards and one that Intel doesn’t yet have an answer for on the workstation side.
Meanwhile, the 32-Core 5975WX sees a 29% improvement over the previous 32-core Threadripper PRO 3975WX. What's more, compared to the 32-core Intel Xeon W-3365, the Threadripper Pro 5975WX is just over 41% faster.
Comparing the 24-core Threadripper Pro 5965WX directly to Intel’s 24-core Xeon X-3345, we see AMD leading by 44% with the same number of cores. While there was no 24-core Threadripper PRO in the previous generation, I will point out that this new 24-core CPU is a whopping 81% faster than the next closest CPU, the Threadripper Pro 3955WX. It is also worth noting that the 24-Core Threadripper PRO 5965WX outperformed Intel’s 32-core Xeon W-3365 by nearly 14%. AMD is able to get quite a bit more out of each core.
How well do AMD Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series CPUs perform in V-Ray?
