Background on Intel Xeon Scalable Single CPU
Intel's Xeon Scalable processors are based on the Skylake and Cascade Lake SP ("scalable performance") architectures, and feature a wide range of core counts and clock speeds to suit different tasks and budgets. They are split into categories using the names of various metals: bronze, silver, gold, and platinum - along with four digit model numbers denoting where each individual processor falls within the overall family and which generation it belongs to.
All Xeons in this series can be used as single processors or in pairs on supported motherboards, with some even working in 4- and 8-way systems. Each CPU supports six channels of DDR4 memory and 48 PCI-Express 3.0 lanes, enabling high RAM capacity and a lot of PCI-E devices per system.
In the second generation - Cascade Lake SP models, denoted by a 2 in the second digit of the model number - a new feature was added called Deep Learning Boost. It uses AVX 512 and some additional circuitry to increase performance in select machine learning workloads.
