Background on DDR5 Memory

DDR5 is the fifth generation of 'double data rate' memory technology. It features reduced power consumption compared to previous generations, while also boosting clock speed and memory density. That means both higher performance and lower power usage, with the potential for larger memory modules as the standard matures.

Due to market volatility, the exact brand and model of memory that we use can vary - but we adhere to strict quality standards and prioritize modules that use Micron or Samsung chips.

Please note that the actual speed at which memory modules will operate in any given system is a combination of several factors: the memory specs, official CPU-supported speeds from Intel & AMD, motherboard memory QVLs, and what we have found to work the best in our internal testing and qualification. If you have questions about what frequency the RAM in your Puget system will be set to, please contact your sales consultant.

William George (Marketing Project Manager) Says:
At launch, DDR5-4800 was the standard maximum memory speed supported by most CPUs - but that often only applied with two sticks of single-rank memory installed. With more modules installed, that maximum often dropped a bit lower. I've seen speeds as low as 3600 specified for some memory combinations on Intel processors, for example. As time has gone by, faster DDR5 memory has become available and newer CPU generations have added support for some of those higher speeds - but those are still usually only supported with one, single-rank memory module per channel. Because of this, a more heavily populated system (with higher density, dual-rank modules and/or multiple modules per channel) will often run at a lower speed. Don't let that worry you, though! These lower speeds usually have minimal impact on processing speed, and having the right amount of RAM is far more important to overall system performance.

Note: Actual DDR5 memory speed may vary and is impacted by a number of factors: CPU support, the number of installed modules, and their rank.
