Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 Intel Core i7 7700K & i5 7600K Performance

Posted on January 5, 2017 by Matt Bach

With the new Kaby Lake CPUs from Intel, the main question everyone wants to know is how much faster they are compared to the old CPUs. In this article, we will be tackling this question in terms of Photoshop performance by examining how the new Intel Core i7 7700K and the Intel Core i5 7600K perform compared to the previous generation Intel Core i7 6700K and Intel Core i5 6600K. In addition, we will also look at a number of “High-End” Core i7 CPUs including the i7 6850K, i7 6900K, and i7 6950X.

Z270, H270, Q270, Q250, B250 – What is the Difference?

Posted on January 5, 2017 by Matt Bach

Alongside the launch of Intel’s new consumer Kaby Lake CPUs, there is also a whole new line of motherboard chipsets available. These six chipsets are divided into two separate categories: consumer and business. In this article, we will examine the features of each of the new chipsets to help you determine which is right for you.

Z270 vs Z170: What is the Difference?

Posted on January 5, 2017 by Matt Bach

With the release of the first Kaby Lake CPUs, Intel has also launched the new Z270 chipset. Unlike some previous launches, where Intel releases all the new chipsets and CPUs at the same time, this time only the top chipset and unlocked (K-series) CPUs will be available at launch.

Most Reliable PC Hardware of 2016

Posted on December 30, 2016 by Matt Bach

At Puget Systems, we track a lot of data but one of the most important things we track is the failure rates of individual components. Reliability is of our primary values, so this data is invaluable for tracking both individual component, product line, and overall brand failure rates. With 2016 coming to a close, we thought we make public a bit of this data to let you know what hardware we found to be the most reliable in 2016.

Adobe Lightroom 2015.8 Storage Performance Analysis

Posted on December 22, 2016 by Matt Bach

While what CPU or video card you should purchase tends to be at the forefront of any workstation hardware discussion, storage is often just as important. While there is little existing evidence that Lightroom benefits from particularly fast storage drives for your project files, considering how fast modern hardware has become we felt the need to look into it in more detail.

Adobe After Effects CC 2017 Disk Cache Performance Analysis

Posted on December 19, 2016 by Matt Bach

Having a fast disk cache plays a very important role in After Effects, allowing you to store frames you have already rendered for playback at a later time. In this article we will be looking at how different speeds of cache drives impact the performance of After Effects.

Samsung 960 Pro vs 950 Pro Performance & Thermal Throttling

Posted on December 1, 2016 by Matt Bach

M.2 drives like the Samsung 960 and 950 Pro can give incredible performance, but under sustained loads they can get hot enough that the drive needs to throttle the performance to stay within safe temperature limits. In this article, we will not only compare the 960 Pro to the 950 Pro in terms of raw performance, but also in terms of how quickly each drive will throttle.

Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015.4 Storage Optimization

Posted on November 30, 2016 by Matt Bach

More than almost any other hardware component, the advice you will often see concerning how many and what kind of storage drive to use along with the best way to configure them is based either on anecdotal evidence or information that is vastly out of date. In this article, we will be benchmarking a variety of drive types and configurations to see what actually makes a difference when working in Premiere Pro.
